Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the right to contest particular calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
