British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
