Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever any cohesion holding it together in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized in their performances as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if they are improving or collapsing.

Matteo's Surprising Comeback

A single player remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this year. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.

He joined originally when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, the vast majority of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of the player's talent. Labeled as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
