Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
